The hurricane that was Week 1 for South Florida teams prepared us for the wrath of Dorian that comes next week. (All jokes aside, everyone stay safe in what should be the scariest storm since Hurricane Wilma in 2005). We had some upsets and some blowouts to start the season. Miami Northwestern nearly skunked Cardinal Gibbons twice, Deerfield looked lost against CC, and STA dominated De La Salle (California) to maintain their #1 National Ranking.
Predictions wise, The Crib went 24-6 (.800) in Week 1, so we were pretty on par with most of the games. Week 2 loses some great matchups because of the storm, but still has some marquee games. Northwestern has its second challenge in Carol City in the battle of Freshman QBs. BTW and Central line it up in a classic rivalry game that should be entertaining to say the least. McArthur and Plantation clash in a 7A battle of a strong offense (Plantation) vs an impressive defense (McArthur).
Lets get into the games and predictions.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Carol City vs Miami Northwestern: The West looked like one of the top 5 teams in the country in Week 1, dismantling 2018 State Champion Cardinal Gibbons, 36-0. They shut down the Air Raid offense with the BEST defensive backfield in the country, swarmed 2020 RB Tajae Davis with one the elite LB groups in the area, and led an offensive attack that featured a freshman QB in Tyger Dickens, 2020 RB Nathaniel Noel, and a potent receiving unit. Carol City impressed, by stifling FSU commit Jaylan Knighton and his BeachBoys to a single offensive score. This game is so hard to decide because of the rivalry and success of both teams, BUT, The West come out victorious this week.
Prediction: 35-14, Northwestern
NOTABLE GAMES
Booker T. Washington vs Miami Central: BTW has the explosive Torey Morrison at QB and beat a solid Lehigh team last week. Central lost in embarrassing fashion to St Frances, maybe the best team in the nation. I think the Rockets redeem themselves this week and put South Florida back on notice by destroying team F5.
Prediction: 41-20, Central
McArthur vs Plantation: McArthur struggled offensively Week 1 but still kept it close against a top Chaminade-Madonna team. They forced multiple turnover on defense and took advantage of opportunities on special teams as well. Plantation has looked locked in since the summer and rolled through Taravella 43-3. This potential playoff game is close, but Plantation's coaching experience and offensive playmakers put them over the top.
Prediction: 20-14, Plantation
Miami Palmetto vs Cardinal Gibbons: Miami Palmetto has lived up the off-season hype so far, taking out Western in their Kickoff Classic and making quick work of a Frank Gore Jr. led Killian team. Gibbons doesn't look like the same team from last year and graduation might have took away too much. Gibbons starts the season off with two donuts from Miami squads with great DBs.
Prediction: 31-0, Miami Palmetto
